The purpose of this study was to analyze occlusion effects as a function of the earphone type and placement in masking for the measurement of bone conducted hearing sensitivity. The subjects included 10 males and 10 females with normal hearing aged twenty to thirty nine. Comparisons were made between changes in the audibility of bone-conducted stimuli both when ears were occluded and when ears were not occluded. Bone conduction thresholds were measured at the frequencies of 250, 500, 1000 and 1500 Hz. The earphones used in this experiment were a TDH 39 headphone and an ER-3A insertphone. Results were as follows£ºFirstly, the occlusion effects of the headphone turned out to be greater than those of the insertphone at all test conditions. Secondly, the occlusion effects of the test ears were greater than those of the non test ears. Thirdly, as the test frequency increased, the occlusion effects decreased. Finally, there was no significant difference between genders. These results indicate that the insertphone may be more effective in masking for the measurement of bone conduction thresholds than the headphone because the occlusion effect of the insertphone is smaller. These data can also give the useful information for hearing aid fitting with additional data from the hearing-impaired persons.
